Northern Ireland contains only two protected reptiles/amphibians:- the smooth newt and the common lizard. Smooth newts are protected under the Wildlife Order in Northern Ireland and may be vulnerable to developments near freshwater habitat. Common lizards are protected under both UK and European legislation and as Northern Ireland’s only reptile are listed as a Northern Ireland Priority species.
