What is a PEA?
A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal incorporates an assessment of an area to support wildlife, with particular emphasis on protected/priority habitats and protected species. A ‘PEA’ is appropriate for planning applications where an NI Biodiversity Checklist has flagged biodiversity interests or a BREEAM assessment has been requested.
What does a PEA include?
In summary a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal survey:
· Includes a basic assessment of the predicted likely impacts of the proposed development on local biodiversity.
· Provides a baseline audit of the biodiversity on a site, and provides a framework for quantifying its nature conservation value.
· Informs whether further surveying is required in order to comply with relevant legislation and planning policy.
